Shut up, let me you why I failed school
Before I tell you why I failed at school, I'm not trying to say I always failed as I did good at times but many times I did miss the mark, this video is mostly focusing on the why behind generally failing in the educational world
I was born in 1985 in Oregon, was homeschooled in the 1990s, was almost not born, had to get glasses for my eyes and hearing tubes for my ears, I was like several years behind in school, I turned ten years old in 1995, started catching up especially around that time, was accelerating at times as I would catch up
Before 1995, I was struggling to talk, but did Kumon Math especially around 1993
I started memorizing and reciting Bible verses for clubs like AWANA Sparkies, Word Of Life Olympians, churches, youth groups, Vacation Bible School (VBS), especially starting around 1994 and a little bit before that too
Was memorizing but also started doing speech therapy especially around 1994 and on and off for like years
Was involved in many social activities in local communities since the 1900s, the homeschooling club, Kenni got into the Salvation Army in the early 2000s and Camp Kuratli in 2007 and the list goes on and on, so many different groups and people I've been involved with on and off since the 20th century
Acting as a sheep in a Thanksgiving play in 1987 and then had a speaking role in a Christmas play in 1995 which followed with making movies for the Arnold Attic with family and friends starting in 1996; and was drawing since like the 1980s, started my Action Strip comic around 1997, had a newspaper around 1999
In the 1990s, every year or almost every year, I would take these tests in order to see if I'm still allowed to be homeschooled, my test results were generally bad, I was often years behind at least in some subjects, but Oregon allowed me to stay in homeschool in the 1990s
At least one time in the 1990s, they said I wouldn't pass the sixth grade, this was probably at one of the annual state tests I would take, so they being like teachers, doctors, scientists, etc
I did many amazing things in the 1990s including 2 trophies from 2 different Bible clubs where I passed their six-years program which requires learning all the verses and everything else that was required for those 6 years from both clubs resulting in getting the Timothy Award and the Steadfast Award
In 2004, graduated from the Forest Grove High School (FGHS) in Forest Grove, Oregon, USA. Graduated from the 2-year New York Word of Life Bible Institute (WOLBI) in 2006, attended Appalachian Bible College (ABC) for a year after that in West Virginia, did The Salvation Army's Revolution Hawaii for a year after that, worked 2 jobs for my first apartment in PDX after that to 2011, attended the Portland Community College (PCC), the Mount Hood Community College, and I'm also generally a life-long learner outside of all of that as well as I'm always researching, reading, writing, talking, watching, putting things together as a writer, content creator, builder, and everything else
Oatmeal, so if you did all that, why did you also fail in school?
One of the problems at times might have been over-confidence I developed as I started catching up in school starting around 1995 and also starting around like 2002 and maybe 2005
One of the problems was my curiosity ends up driving me possibly insane as I've very self-driven to do what I want to do as I'm researching on my own, as I'm asking maybe too many questions outside of the box as a rebel, as I'm tackling maybe too much sometimes
One of the problems was working too hard doing too many at the same time as I was perhaps under the illusion that I could do anything as I've already passed the sixth grade which they said would never happen and just the fact I was catching up in school for years, I started feeling at times I was morphing like a Power Ranger from being a turtle to being a rabbit in a race in life against time
One of the problems was I struggled to say no as I wanted to more and more in life, I wanted to do everything, perhaps was afraid to ask for help at times, I felt like a failure which drove me to work even harder, slept like five hours a day many times during college especially, was taking shortcuts, was running around trying to get everything done
One of the problems you might say was I was too fearful of the future resulting in me trying to do work study or other jobs especially during my college years in the 2000s during that decade and especially as I was taking all of that to an all-time high around 2007 resulting in losing scholarships and ultimately being like banned from ABC in 2008 in that I didn't have the money at that time to pay for it as I took out a $3.5K USD loan and as my parents were getting a divorce and as my favorite uncle Jim and only surviving grandpa Dick died the next year in 2008, Michael Jackson died the next year in 2009, Blake Webb died the next year in 2010
One of the problems is, speaking of Michael Jackson, I suffer from the Creativity Disease MJ also suffered from which keeps creative minds like us tossing and turning at night as we think about videos to make, articles to write, projects, work, places to go, people to talk to, things to work on, things to try, I sometimes would let those internal creative forces drive me away from getting good grades in school as I was trying to take opportunities as they came
One of the problems is underestimating how short life is, how small each day was, I packed my schedules with too many activities as a workaholic perfectionist introvert turned extrovert running around trying to start perhaps too many projects trying to like talk in code in planting seeds in trying to start some kind of Oatmeal Legacy subliminally immediately or gradually after many decades
If I went back in time, I could do better at school now because I can better pace myself, I understand my limitations a little more, I can handle my emotions a little more, I understand better how to pick your battles in which hills you're willing to die on
In school, I probably got better grades in my art classes, drama classes, computer related classes, writing, maybe history sometimes, English, woods, cooking, child care which Tiffany Cumbo also took, physical education (PE) minus the written tests which I didn't generally study for, I did bad in math classes, science classes, Spanish classes, health, biology, welding
Why did you fail at Basic Metals, were you looking at Savannah Montoya too much, too distracted as we watched Hey Arnold before class started as your first ever public school class, was it crazy that your teacher was Bruce Lee and he was sometimes drunk and would get to class late sometimes?
